4 Things To Know About Life In Wyoming

When one of our foster daughters moved in with us at 4.5 years old, she called it Wyomin-go…. and that sticks with me. At the time, I didn’t know we were a mere 2.5 years from moving to the good ol’ state of Wyomin-go ourselves. Incase you didn’t know, Zach told me when we were dating that he planned on moving to Wyoming. I said no way, not happening, not ever. And well here we are, 3 years of living in Wyomin-go!

Here is my list of 4 things you should know about living in Wyoming after being here for 3 years now:

  1. The wind is brutal. Brutal. It is intense. I can’t say it is really something you get use to but rather you just learn to deal with it. I don’t enjoy it. I hate getting the kids in and out of the car in the bitter cold wind. But the perks of living here outweigh my intense feelings about the wind.

  2. Small town life— it’s definitely my jam. Sure, we don’t have a zoo, aquarium, or major sporting events. But the stuff we do have is affordable and 10x easier to go do. I think about the stress that taking our foster daughters to the Denver aquarium caused me every once in a while; I love being able to go do stuff here without the added traffic, expense and mass crowds of people.

  3. Sometimes it feels like we are living a good 10-15 years behind the times. When it came to doing our house build, we discovered not only does no one not do anything in a hurry around here but also its SO old school in terms of getting things scheduled/paid etc. And truthfully, for the most part, we love it. Life before we moved was SO chaotic all the time (hello foster care), this has been a really nice change of pace for us. (Also why our house building project was paused for a while and we ended up buying a fixer upper house in town. Fingers crossed we break ground on our house this spring/summer).

  4. There just isn’t much between towns…. Like don’t expect to be able to make a bunch of stops (or sometimes any) if you are driving from one town to another. This leaves for really beautiful scenery to watch when traveling. But if you have kids, they learn how to use the bathroom on the side of the road even when it’s cold and snowy (and don’t think you are too good to do it yourself either ha).

Simply put, we love it here. I am a BIG fan of the slower pace of life (maybe that is partially because life before we moved here was total and mad chaos with COVID, foster care, work etc). We are providing opportunities for our kids here that we wouldn’t have been able to do staying where we were. For one, I quit my corporate job in the spring of 2024 to be present with our kids full-time in this season. Two, we have 6 crazy spunky chickens that our kids are learning to care for; they are SO excited about the future of animals on our homestead. Are there things we miss about our life in Colorado? Of course. We do really miss being close to our families but the 4.5 hour trip isn’t bad to make in the spring, summer and fall. There are times I really miss being close to more store options too (but more on that later).

There were a handful of times over the last 3 years I shed tears wanting to move back to where we came from. But I think it has surprised Zach and I both how few those have actually been. Wyoming suits our family and unless God tells us otherwise, we are here for the long haul.
