Homesteading: 2 years In
Honestly, when I realize it has been 2 years since we bought our 40acres of dirt, sold our “normal” neighborhood house and moved to Wyoming to start this journey, I truly cannot believe it. Part of me is surprised how fast it has gone, the other part of me is surprised how different the journey has ended up looking for us. But really, that’s been our entire life since we got married. I would have NEVER guessed that we would do the things we have done so it really shouldn’t surprise me at this point.
If you missed it, we ended up buying a house in town that needed to be completely gutted and renovated instead of living in the 5th wheel. We realized that our forever homestead build was going to be a lot more difficult and longer of a process then we anticipated, camper living was just not for any of us long term (it was also never the plan to live in it super long term). You can read our one and a half year fixer upper house update HERE!
But projects out at the homestead are slowly rolling on. We FINALLY have power. That project ended up being a VERY long process. Partially because it was difficult to get the electrical gear in that we needed. Partially because we had a very hard winter/spring last year here so that stalled our trenching endeavors to run power under ground. Partially because the power company is not fast either. We started the process in April 2022 and finished in August 2023.
The barn is (mostly) done which has been a HUGE help to have already! See more about the barn HERE.
Next on the agenda:
Fencing in our property
Working on our driveway
Drilling a well for water (and crossing our fingers that we hit water)
Moving all our stuff that is in storage in the conex so we can move the conex.
Breaking ground on our forever home
The question has come up a lot about why it’s taking so long to do. Short answer- we are doing it all ourselves including funding it. We do not have any loans out for the homestead and we are not planning on it. (We also do not have any loans out for the house renovations for the house we bought in town, just a mortgage for the home purchase). Finances are a difficult and awkward subject to talk about but we firmly believe that not living in debt is important for this journey and for our family.
