Kid’s Closet Renovation

Buying a 1977 house after living in a house built in the 2000’s has made me need to rethink storage space and how to best utilize what is available. We are trying our best to not overload our home with “stuff” and to really only have things we use and love. But reality is, we all have STUFF.

In our last house, we had a loft that we utilized as a play room for our foster children. We had a pretty strict no toys/playing in the bedrooms (for a WHOLE bunch of reasons). But we don’t have a play space in this house (yet, the plan is eventually to have a play area in the basement) so we need to utilize the bedrooms for toys and sleeping. First step was making the best use of her closet space.

I looked for WEEKS at all kinds of closet systems. I looked at wire shelves all the way to a full built in system with drawers etc. But I wasn't ready to spend $1000 on a closet system. I also HATED the wire shelving units we had at our last house.

So I ended up creating my own system. I added shelves to the sides and then I added 2 long shelves up above. This leaves room in the bottom of the closet still. I am hoping to build/put something in the bottom area for dress up clothes.

THIS is the bracket that holds a 12” board and clothing rod that we went with.

THIS is the bracket we used for the 10” shelf above it.

For the side shelves, I just cut some wood to build the braces.

I can’t find the exact stain I used but THIS is similar!
